The Red Lion Inn

One of Millson Interior Design’s more extensive external design projects, The Red Lion in Moore, just outside Warrington, is a favourite not only with locals but dog walkers too, thanks to its proximity to the Cheshire ring Canal walk.

Despite being a well-established pub and known for its good food, the site had a lot of underutilised external space with a closed off central courtyard, including an historically listed Barn to the rear of the of the site backing onto a large grassed area with only a few picnic benches sited.

The brief was given to create a more ‘secret garden’ style dining area which allowed access from the front of the site through the courtyard to the grassed seating area at the back while also utilising the existing barn.

The central hexagonal timber pergola was designed with an open fire pit and raised seating around as a focal point. Subtle feature lighting was added throughout the pergola and new fixed seating within the barn, which has been opened as a secret thoroughfare to the grassed external area.

Millson Interior Design had to work closely with the local conservation officer to help retain and preserve the many historical elements of the Courtyard and barn which included the re-setting of the extensive existing, listed cobbles to the centre of the courtyard.

We also addressed issues internally to allow better customer and staff access to the courtyard from the existing internal dining area by re-configuring the existing toilet corridors. This allowed for a new side access door which lead directly into the new courtyard seating area.
